GIMP is an advanced image manipulation software application for an array of uses

Working with a ton of photos and images has put a real strain on my need for a software that can meet my functional requirements that I need to do with my image files. I have used multiple software applications for these different functions and I’ve been on the lookout since for a single software application that can do all these. That’s when I came across GIMP.

According to the software’s developers, GIMP is an open-source software that can process images for editing and manipulation. Since it’s free, which really caught my eye, I decided to gauge the potential of this image editing application further, and assess how it can make my work easier. I downloaded the application to see for myself. After downloading and installing the software, I opened the application and was surprised to find that the software closely resembled Adobe’s Photoshop. I noticed many functions that are clearly the same as Photoshop and a Layer panel that I always found to be very useful in intermediate and advanced photo editing software. There are also panels for Brushes, Tools and many other functions and I now realized that this may be one of the best open-source application that can easily be acquired compared to other expensive applications.

With a comprehensive array of functionalities and working panels at my command, GIMP is truly a powerful and versatile image editing software application that can easily be used by novice to advanced users.

  • For an advanced photo editing software application, GIMP is free
  • A spectrum of painting tools readily available
  • Individual channels and layers give you more versatility
  • Ability to handle a wide range of image and photo file formats

  • Text function appear to have some limitations

Gimp has often been identified as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop. One of the biggest positive points about Gimp is that it is completely free and open source which means that there are plenty of resources online and users can easily download it for free. It has almost every feature that are available in Photoshop. While some features may be missing, Gimp has a plethora of plugins that enable additional features to be added to Gimp. The user interface of Gimp is quite minimal and users who do not want to spend hundreds of dollars on Photoshop can get Gimp for free. It works as well as Photoshop in editing raster images, adding effects, and so on. Sometimes though users may find that they have to perform a few extra steps to get the same results with Gimp. That said the software is still worth it considering it does not ask for a dime

  • • Plenty of features for editing photographs
  • • Availability of many different plugins

  • • May require many extra steps

GIMP fully known as (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an image editor used to free-form draw, retouch, convert, resize and do any other type of editing to pictures.Gimp takes the form of photoshop and is almost at the same level. The best thing about gimp is that it is user friendly unlike photoshop.Gimp is continously improving now with the single and multi window released.Gimp also doesnt require much download memory and saves you a bunch(86mb) compared to other image editors which require(1gb) and above.Gimp also has support for other application files like photoshop, coral paint and autodesk among others.Gimp is also a free and open source program meaning you get more for less. This program is the future for image editing.

1.Run gimp exe as admin..A setup will appear asking you to select the language you want to install gimp in.

2.After selecting the language the next step will the install button or cancel.

3.Wait fo a while for the installation to complete(note you can always cancel the installation by clicking on cancel)

4.Finally gimp will finish on finish.

5.The fact that the installation has completed doesnt mean that the program will now run.So go to start>all programs>gimp and click on it..It will take about 3 to 4 minutes to load the tols needed. Finally when its done,a shortcut icon will appear on the screen,if it doesnt copy the one on the start and paste it on the you installation is done.

6.Click on the icon to launch gimp and edit some pictures.

Advanced graphics card with up to date drivers

29mb free hdd memory

512 mb ram

The fact that gimp is free,is the best thing.Competing with other image editors which are not free. The images can be saved to different formats and import from other applications.

  • gimp is a free of charge
  • Has tools only found in high end programs
  • Is always upgraded to fit the customer needs

  • Not AT ALL user friendly

Based on GNU Project, GIMP is a digital retouching and photo editor released as free and open-source software. Created as a university exercise in 1995 by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis, the program has grown and been improved with multiple plugins and scripts, becoming a serious competitor for programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

Its easy-to-use interface and multiple tools are the perfect solution for all of those users afraid of big photo editor software. Rotate, resize, change colors, paint or even add some text over your pictures, and save them on one of the numerous formats GIMP works with. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, try downloading some plug-ins to increase your manipulation options.

How to Use

The GNU Project (acronym for “GNU’s not Unix”) was created as a mass-collaboration project to develop free software. Based on that open-source idea GIMP (General Image Manipulation Program) was created. Basically it works like Photoshop in every single sense: it process digital graphics and pictures and offers multiple tools for editing and retouching. But thanks to the free-software concept, its code is shared with the whole GIMP community, letting us create as many tools and plugins as we need. GIMPshop for example recreates Adobe’s Photoshop interface for all of you that don’t feel comfortable with the original. GIMP FX Foundy includes more than a hundred new effects for your photos; and GIMP Paint Studio has a bunch of new color palettes and brushes. All for free.

The multiple plugins and scripts makes GIMP a serious competitor for programs such Adobe Photoshop

This new 2.8.1 version was launched in different languages and with most of the bugs fixed. On the official website you can find tutorials and user FAQS, to help you to configure and learn all about the program. There is even a special plugin website where you can find all the user add-ons and templates to make your job easier. After a simple user registration process, all the products are able for download, along with easy download and installation explanations.
